Though I live full time in columbia for work and school, I make the all too familiar treck up I-26 w to Tryon, NC so often that I now know the drive like the back of my hand. I go to visit family very dear to my heart, to clear my head, and to just enjoy all the good things!

Through these many family visits, ive begun to learn the do's and dont's of family get together's and the ways in which I get the most out of my family time (being a busy college student I feel I dont see them enough!) I wanted to share my tips with yall along with all the good things that the little towns of NC have to offer!

a little background...

My mothers side of the family consists of 4 sisters: my mother (the youngest) and her three older siblings. Needless to say, I have been surrounded by women most of my life--and let me tell you--they have been the best role models a gal could ask for! They are all such go-getters and have taught both myself and my two sisters what it is to be kind, patient, and ambitious.

Being so close with my aunts, I have taken many a trip to the oasis that is My Aunt's North Carolina home.Whenever life gets overwhelming, and i need space to just b r e a t h, I love to travel to Tryon, NC, just across the SC-NC border. Just look at some of these photos, do they not take your breath away?

Tryon, NC, aka heaven on earth

During my most recent visit to NC, my family and I traveled to the historic home of Carl Sandburg, which is now a national protected and recognized park! This acreage is located in the quaint town of Flat Rock, NC. My family and i love hiking and spending time outside together. the Carl Sandburg home is perfect because it is so whimsical and fun while also being peaceful and serene. My little cousin absolutely loved visiting with the friendly goats on the property and I couldn't get enough of the scenic views.

After visiting the beautiful sandburg home, we went to lunch at the delicious, inviting, and environmentally friendly Flat rock village bakery. not only was it a delicious way to end the adventurous day, but it had a little something for everyone!

Now to the heart of this post!

Here our my tips for the best ways to plan a get together that everyone will enjoy:

#1: Leave technology behind! stay present in the moment so you can truly enjoy your time together.

#2: Dont be afraid to stay local when planning a family reunion or get together! Often, people from a big city actually like to get away from the hustle and bustle and catch up with family in a quiet and relaxed environment!

--> note: I am a bit biased here. I have always loved small towns and the unique vibes and overall feeling associated with each one<--

#3: Dont be afraid to dress to impress or show off your own sense of style to family you haven't seen in a while! My mom always taught me 'dress to impress'. Let your family get a sense of who you are through your clothes! I take so much pride in what i wear and love to express myself through fashion. anyways, matching family t-shirts are overrated, right?

Below is a look that I love for family get togethers! Comfy, Casual, but still totally 100% my unique style.

#4: On that topic of fashion, don't go all out either. I am always that girl who packs THE MOST when going on family vacations (lol who else can relate). My family accepts it, (bless them) and loves me for me! But, if you know you're family is casual or is planning a fun out of doors weekend, leave the heels at home--even if you think a fashion emergency might call for them! (trust me, I would tell myself anything to justify another pair of shoes)!

#5: When planning a visit with family, plan activities that everyone, young and old, can enjoy! (this is why i love the Carl Sandburg home yall! Perfect for any and everyone).

I hope y'all have enjoyed all the good things that Tryon and Flat Rock, NC have to offer! The next time you have a free weekend maybe go explore that small town a few miles away and see what adventures you may find! Maybe even find a couple of friends or family members who'd want to tag along too.
