At the conclusion of my sophomore year of college I found myself unbelievably relieved to have finished all of my courses yet, at the same time, unbelievably sad to see my second year of college end. Many students go through a period of time, especially seniors, where they can feel quite down--depressed even--during a big life transition. At the conclusion of my sophomore year I was transitioning into a summer living full time in Columbia, SC. By the end of May I was working multiple jobs and juggling an internship--what many would consider a major life change. Determined to focus on having a fun and productive summer I decided to plan a trip to see my dear friend Ashton Cox (a Greenwood native like me) in one of my favorite places: Charleston, South Carolina. Below are the highlights of our trip as well as some tips to escape the summer time blues we can all feel from time to time!
While I had a blast exploring Charleston, there are many ways to get the most out of your summer. As trivial as these ideas may sound they truly can help!
1) Make a list of all the things you want to do this summer, big and small!
2) Think about how you will go about doing all of these things. Maybe start a change jar so you can buy those concert tickets!
3) Pick up a hobby. Often college students put hobbies and other things they enjoy on the back burner during their semesters at school. The summer is the perfect time to dust off that guitar or that book you love and dive back in! Or you could always volunteer at your local animal shelter or other local charities. Its a great learning experience and makes you feel good too!
4) Plan a day to not plan anything. What I mean is simply that routines are great but summer should be about relaxing and taking a break from routines. Pick one day each week to simply go with the flow, plan nothing, and see what fun opportunities present themselves throughout the day.
5) Finally, always look for the good in every situation. Even little things can make a good day fabulous. Never forget the always alluring #treatyourself mentality after a long day working your summer job! Even the smallest treat, like frozen yogurt with a friend, will surprisingly be the thing you remember most about your summer.
Crazy concerts and distant trips and vacations are wonderful but never forget that sometimes its the simplest trips and ideas that will make your summer full of #allthegoodthings
